Health Science Program

The Health Science program at Poteet High School prepares students for a wide range of careers in the healthcare industry, offering them the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in this fast-growing field. Through hands-on experiences and rigorous coursework, students develop the foundation for success in health-related professions, such as nursing, medical assisting, and other healthcare services.


Courses Offered in Health Science

  • 9th Grade - Principles of Health Science
    Introduction to the healthcare industry, focusing on basic medical terminology, career exploration, and foundational healthcare concepts.

  • 10th Grade - Medical Terminology
    A more in-depth study of medical terminology, focusing on understanding the language used in healthcare settings. This course prepares students for advanced healthcare studies by teaching the language necessary to communicate in medical environments.

  • 11th Grade - Anatomy and Physiology (A&P)
    This course provides students with an in-depth understanding of the human body, including its structure and functions. Students learn how different systems of the body interact and the role they play in maintaining health.

  • 12th Grade - Practicum in Health Science / Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)
    Students gain hands-on experience in healthcare settings through clinical rotations and have the opportunity to earn the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification, which qualifies them to assist physicians in clinical settings, take medical histories, prepare patients for exams, and handle administrative tasks like scheduling and billing.
